Article SRM Kids is back for 2023 and what a great start it has been!

SRM Kids for 2023 kickstarted in St Elias, Wollongong where 15 kids were registered and looking forward to making hedgehog crunch balls for the homeless.

March saw 20 kids registered to make and bake vegan chocolate cakes at St Michael & Gabriel, Ryde.

Before commencing both classes, a prayer was said and the SRM Chef taught the children about St Raphael’s Mission, how important their jobs were today and who their desserts were going to. Then the classes began with the SRM Chef demonstrating the steps in the recipe before the kids attempted it themselves.

At St Elias, Wollongong, the recipe had the kids working their arms out as they used their wooden spoons to smash the biscuits and then their hands to continue crushing them until they appeared like fine sand. They then started mixing all the ingredients together before rolling them into small golf-sized balls dipped in coconut.

At Sts Michael & Gabriel, Ryde, it was all about the quality of the whisking – from the flour to the water & vegetable oil; another arm workout. Vegan dessert was on the menu to ensure that all kids could keep to their fast while still enjoying and tasting the fruits of their labour. With 21 cakes needing to be baked for 30 minutes, the kids really demonstrated their patience with this recipe.

In both classes, the kids got to keep a few pieces of their desserts each to try for themselves while the rest were stored and distributed to the homeless the Monday night that followed.

The recipes were a hit all around with many requesting our recipes at the end of the classes and via our Instagram and Facebook pages.

St Raphael’s Mission would like to thank St Elias, Wollongong and Sts Michael & Gabriel, Ryde for hosting SRM Kids over these two months as well as the kids for all their efforts in making these amazing desserts for the homeless to eat!

Keep an eye out for future class registrations which are coming to a parish hall near you soon!

These will be advertised on the St Raphael’s Mission Facebook & Instagram pages as well as SRM’s Whatsapp Notification group. If you would like to be added to this group, please text 0404 323 868 to receive all SRM notifications in the future.
