Our mission and key principles

The mission of St. Emilia’s Young Mums Group is to proclaim the holiness of motherhood in order to Glorify God, through the example of His Mother, the Theotokos, that also inspired St. Emilia- the mother of many saints!

Background

Mothers are pivotal in the Church congregation and, in most cases, mothers maintain the bringing a child to church, educating them spiritually, and fostering a love for God from an early age. Unfortunately, mothers rarely get a break to attend spiritual talks, activities or to listen to the Sunday sermon as they are always attending to their children. In some cases, mothers are made to feel unwelcome in their own parishes by other parishioners through comments or stares at them and their children. If a mother is not made welcome, the entire family feels the impact. Given this reality, there is a need to cater to mothers in another way.

Who is a ‘Young Mum’?

A ‘Young Mum’ is a mother who looks after and protects a young child… There is no age limit to the mums that attend, though talks and lectures are aimed at mums of a newborn, up to primary school aged children. If you are a mother of a child who is in the early years of high school, you are still welcome to attend, though the topics may not always be applicable.

It goes without saying that this is mum-only session (with the exception of invited professional speakers, who will usually only stay for the duration of their talk).

About St. Emilia’s Young Mums Group

Founded in 2018, we have been inviting professionals that are normally hard to get to, to speak about important topics, that are sometimes difficult to address.
We meet once a month in a central location (presently St. Mary’s Nativity Church, Mays Hill), and is open to ALL young mums (from within our archdiocese or not). Your young children (up to primary-school age) are welcome to join in the playgroup as well in a safe, child-friendly environment.
This is 100% no-cost to mums, volunteer-run, not-for-profit, and self-funded group. The vision for this group is to grow and encourage the love of Christ, as demonstrated by the Theotokos and modelled through the life of St. Emilia. This growth will only come with your help in sharing the message of our group.
