SETS Team First Training

On Friday 19 July 2019 SETS team completed “Accidental Counselling and Self-Care“ training. This training was provided by STARTTS and delivered in their centre in Auburn.

There will be times when SETS clients talk about their previous traumatic experiences of war and violence, or display other types of trauma reactions. This training is aimed to provide and assist our team with basic tips and skills for how to recognise and deal with difficult behaviours of people from refugee and newly arrived backgrounds. This training was mostly practical and focused on a series of case studies and role plays to develop skills in dealing with trauma reactions.

Training covered the following topics:

  • Refugees and trauma
  • The accidental counsellor
  • Recovery principles
  • Disclosure
  • Sadness and depression
  • Anger and aggression
  • Making appropriate referrals

SETS project is funded by Department of Social Services through the Assyrian Australian Association.
