ACOY NSW annual sports day was back with a bang for another year!
On the 12th of June, the King’s Birthday Holiday, over 130 youth members split amongst 14 teams from 7 parishes across the state, gathered together for a fun filled day at the Whitlam Centre in Liverpool, as they battled it out on the basketball courts.
The day began with prayer and a review of the rules and instructions, followed by the teams warming up as they prepared to meet each other on the courts to battle it out.
The youth were blessed with the attendance of His Eminence Metropolitan Basilios, Archimandrite Ephram Abassi, along with Father’s Elias Albaba, John Daher, Phillip Saba, Theophan Nahas and Deacon Luka Al Sheikh.
After the initial rounds where each team played 4 games, we moved into the finals where 8 out of the 14 teams, made it through. The day ultimately came down to 2 teams from St Nicholas meeting in the grand final to bring the trophy to St Nicholas for the first time.
His Eminence, Metropolitan Basilios got the grand final underway with the official jump ball to start proceedings.
Congratulations to Saint Nicholas Punchbowl for taking out this year’s sports day and to all players and participants who made the day as fun and competitive as it was.
A special thanks to our title sponsor, Speedway, for their ongoing generosity and support of ACOY and the youth of our archdiocese, which assists ACOY in successfully running this and many more events for our youth.
ACOY would also like to thank our volunteers on the day, Andrew Fayad from Afisio for running the first aid on the day, as well as all those who assisted in preparing food for our competitors and all the organisers for putting together a hugely successful day.
We look forward to next year’s sports day, as we aim to return even bigger!
