On Sunday 28 May 2023, His Eminence celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral, where His Eminence also led Trisagion prayers for the late Clergy who had served the Cathedral over the last 102 years. Following the Divine Liturgy, the Sunday School classes came together to share the story of the Cathedral, as well as a few students telling the story of their family’s personal connection to the Cathedral. It was a beautiful display by the children, bringing a tear to many eyes as parishioners reflected on their ancestors and the history of the Cathedral. Following the wonderful presentation by the Sunday School, His Eminence and the children cut a cake to commemorate the 102nd birthday of St George Cathedral Redfern.
On the weekend of Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 May, His Eminence commemorated the foundation of the Cathedral with a Thanksgiving Service and Divine Liturgy. The Thanksgiving Service on Saturday evening was attended by the Clergy of our Archdiocese, representatives of the NSW State and Local governments and family members of founding Parishioners. Following the Service, His Eminence and a number of guest speakers spoke to those in attendance about the history of the Cathedral. It was a special evening where the early days of the Cathedral were remembered.
St George Cathedral Redfern, the mother Church of the Antiochian people in Australia, was founded in 1920. Presided by His Eminence Metropolitan Basilios, St George Redfern is celebrating the Cathedral’s Centenary throughout 2023.
