Feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross

On 14 September, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of the Elevation (Exaltation) of the Life-giving Holy Cross; a feast related to a series of historical events linked to the search for The Holy Cross, eventually found in Jerusalem in the fourth century by two equals to the Apostles Sts. Constantine and Helena. Patriarch Macarius went on to Elevate the Holy Cross and bless the people with it. The Cross has central significance in the spiritual and liturgical life of Christians; and because of the importance of this Feast, the Orthodox Church allocated the Sunday which falls before the Feast [...]

“Be of good cheer; it is I; do not be afraid.”

9th Sunday after Pentecost This week is the Ninth Sunday after Pentecost, the Gospel reading is from Matthew chapter 14:22-33. The Gospel passage starts with Jesus “constraining his disciples to get into a ship", and as always, Christ's intentions carry a deeper metaphor than the surface shows. He wanted His disciples to be in the midst of a difficult condition; to test their faith and the depth of their trust in God “For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth,” (Hebrews 12:6). When Christ climbed the mountain to pray, He taught us how to behave when in the eye of the [...]

A Review Of the Young Adults Retreat 2018

Who Am I? A seemingly simple question running like a thread within the scriptures, particularly during the instances of God’s divine revelation to His people. It expands our mind into contemplation and reflection on our own identity, purpose, vocation and discernment, as Christians journeying towards Theosis and salvation. These themes, among many others, were delved into by our youth through the guidance of our Spiritual Fathers, led by His Eminence, Sayedna Basilios, at this year's Young Adult Retreat, organised and hosted by ACOY and held at the Antiochian Village in Goulburn last weekend. Our youth have spoken up about their daily struggles [...]
