On 09 May 2022, the Settlements Engagement and Transition Support Project (SETS) in partnership with the Ethnic Communities Council of NSW (ECCNSW) and the NSW Department of Education (NSWDE) conducted an “Equity Group Consultation” with newly arrived parents who have children in primary school.

Back in 2018, the NSW Department of Education conducted a review of selective education. They found that some groups are under-represented in opportunity classes and selective high schools. The NSW Department of Education knows that high potential and gifted students come from all walks of life and that sometimes high potential can be masked or hidden. The Department is committed to making changes that help parents and community members to identify and meet the needs of high potential children from our community.

This consultation aimed to improve this and make sure that everyone knows about, and has access to, these schools and programs. A discussion and questions were asked about the best ways in which the department can encourage greater awareness within our community. Please see the flyer below.

The SETS project would like to thank ECCNSW and NSWDE for their support and assistance in providing such a great consultation opportunity to our New Arrived Refugees and migrants.
