Last Friday, on the 7th of February, St. Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox Church of the Dormition held its annual youth trivia night. Rainy weather did not deter as over 70 youth from parishes across Sydney – including from our sister Orthodox archdioceses – joined for what promised to be an exciting night for all.
The night began with a flash dance from the SMMP youth to welcome everyone. The first session immediately followed with three rounds. One of these rounds was based on the sacred art of Byzantine Chant in the Orthodox Church. Contestants were tested on concepts such as the tones in Byzantine music and the history of hymnographers in the Church.
Dinner followed the first session, consisting of pasta and burgers which was graciously prepared by some ladies of the parish. The second session consisted of three more rounds. These rounds included performances from each table which provided an opportunity for contestants to showcase their vocal talents and great creativity. There are many people who should consider joining parish choirs!
The night ended with awards being given to the best dressed male and female, as well as the winning table.
Thank you to everyone who came and made it a fun night with a great atmosphere!
