On Monday the 10th of June, the Antiochian Christian Orthodox Youth (ACOY) of NSW, hosted their Annual Sports Day, with indoor soccer as the sport of choice for 2019.
Close to 150 of our combined church’s youth attended, with each parish competing with at least one team during this fun-filled day. This event was brought to life with the intention of facilitating fellowship and encouraging unity within our sister churches and amongst our youth, using the competitive context brought to the forefront in the sporting arena.
The day began with prayer, led by Fr Nabil who is the spiritual advisor to ACOY. Following this we were given a brief spiritual injection from Fr Nabil where he emphasized the importance of remembering that whilst we are competing in a sporting arena, we are also called to remember the spiritual arena that we are in on a day to day basis and the importance of kicking goals in that context.
The day was a huge success with St. Mary’s, Mount Pritchard (Parish of the Dormition of the Theotokos) triumphing against a formidable St. Nicholas, Punchbowl outfit who gave it all they had right down to the final whistle. SMMP walk away with bragging rights for 2019, with a host of parishes already back out on the training grounds preparing for victory in 2020.
The ACOY NSW committee would like to heartfully thank all the clergy who attended the day for their support and encouragement. We’d also like to thank all the volunteers who assisted both on the day and in the lead up to the event. A massive thank you and congratulations to all our youth who participated in the day’s events and contributed to what was a fruitful and successful event.
This exciting day was proudly sponsored by Fit to Live Training and we appreciate their support in facilitating the day’s events.
We look forward to hosting our next sporting event +
