1   HOLY SYNOD

From Tuesday 12 October 2004, to Friday 15 October 2004

Matters decided were

North American Archdiocese

  1. North America Archdiocese is granted “self rule” status as an archdiocese within the Patriarchate of Antioch
  2. The constitution of the self-governing archdiocese was approved with some relevant changes
  3. The North American Archdiocese is to have three new bishops
  4. Under the metropolitan archbishop, the archdiocesan synod of diocesan bishops will select bishops elect from among the candidates nominated by the general assembly of the archdiocese
  5. All bishops elect will be ordained bishop at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Damascus
  6. All newly ordained bishops will be enthroned within their own dioceses afterwards

2   ARISING FROM THE MEETING OF THE HOLY SYNOD

The three new bishops elect for the newly self-governing Archdiocese were selected by the North American Synod of Diocesan Bishops on 28 October 2004.

They were:

  • Reverend Father Mark Maymon, who was selected to be Bishop of Toledo and the Mid-West
  • Right Reverend Archimandrite Thomas Joseph, who was selected to be Bishop of Pittsburg and the East, and
  • Reverend Father Rafeek Mufarrij, who was selected to be Bishop of Ottawa and Upstate New York

3    WITHIN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND


Patriarch Pavle of Serbia

His Holiness Patriarch Pavle, Patriarch of all Serbia, visitied Australia from Friday 29th October 2004.

Our parish of St George in Melbourne hosted a cocktail party in his honour.

On Monday, 8th November 2004 at 10am at St Dimitri Church Cabramatta, His Beatitude Patriarch Pavle presided at Divine Liturgy. At the invitation of Patriarch Pavle, His Eminence Paul concelebrated at the service.

Jeremy Davis

We have been blessed with the presence of Subdeacon Jeremy Davis from North America who is working with our Youth and Sunday schools. Jeremy will stay with us until June 2005. After spending over 3 months with the youth of Melbourne, Jeremy will be travelling to Brisbane, and then to Sydney, where he is going to be spending many months working in the Lord's vineyards.

Primary Schools

The archdiocese is preparing two applications for primary schools, one in Sydney and another in Melbourne. Classes are expected to begin in February 2006

Bankstown Child Care

A childcare centre is expected to be built on the unused portion of the Saint Nicholas Bankstown property. A development application is being prepared for the local council

Melbourne Aged Care

An application was lodged on 14 October 2004 for a licence for a home for the ageing in Melbourne

Melbourne Youth Centre

A youth centre in downtown Melbourne is expected to be open by the end of November 2004

Newcastle College

A residential college for university and Tafe students is in operation in Newcastle, NSW. The college can accommodate up to forty students in single bed rooms. Bible studies, discussions, and prayer are conducted in Newcastle under the supervision of Subdeacon Chris Gain

Father Antonio Cognoni

We welcome Antonio Cognoni from the Anglican Church. Father Antonio is serving with Father Dimitri Baroudi of Saint Nicholas Church East Melbourne.

Sylvania Waters Dinner Dance

A most successful and enjoyable dinner dance was held on Friday 5th November 2004 at Doltone House, Sylvania Waters, NSW, in aid of the education programs of the Archdiocese

Archdiocesan Board of Trustees

The meeting for the election of members of the Archdiocesan Board of Trustees was held on the weekend of 11th to 13th February 2005 at Saint George Parish Hall Thornbury Victoria. Yvette Jammal assisted with hotel reservations

Father George Mattar

On Sunday 21 November 2004, His Eminence ordained Deacon George Mattar to the rank of priest. Father George was assigned to serve the church of Saint Mary, Williamstown, Victoria

Archdiocesan Chancery

Work is complete on extending the archdiocesan headquarters at Illawong NSW. His Eminence thanks all the faithful who extended a helping hand for the project.

Saint George Redfern

On Saturday, 23 October 2004 the church of Saint George Redfern celebrated it’s 50th Jubilee anniversary with a Dinner dance and a Divine Liturgy on Sunday 24 October at which His Eminence Metropolitan Paul presided.

On Sunday, 14 November a Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the morning by His Eminence and followed by a book launch at 6:00pm.

Saint George Melbourne

His Eminence presided over celebration of Saint George thirty-two year service in the current building. A dinner dance was held on Saturday, 30 October, followed by Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on Sunday 31 October 2004.

Youth in Melbourne

Dr Christos Galiotos PhD, is working with our youth in Melbourne following the departure of Subdeacon Jeremy. Dr Christos contacted the presidents of our youth groups and the priests, to achieve this.
