Special Year End Opportunities for those over 70 and one half years old: Charitable donations made from your IRA accounts until December 31, 2009. IRA owners of least 70 ½ years can make a charitable donation of up to $100,000 as part of their minimum distribution requirement, each year for 2008 and 2009 and donate it directly to a charity of their choice, tax free. For example, you can donate any amount up to $100,000 to OCL or its Endowment Fund for each year without paying any tax for your gift. Normally, you would pay both ordinary state and federal income taxes on such a gift based on your personal income tax rate. Depending on your tax bracket, this means you could save between $2,000 and $3,500 in taxes which would otherwise be deducted from your IRA account for every gift of $10,000. Such gifts are an important consideration when meeting the minimum distribution requirement for your IRA account. For additional details on this new provision in the tax law please speak with your tax advisor.
